The terms that govern your use of the Mains website, the Mains for Mac app and the Mains for iPhone app.

In short

  • Mains is free, open-source software. The MIT License governs the code; these terms govern the website and the apps as we distribute them.
  • The agents you run act on your Mac with the permissions you grant. Review what they do before you rely on it.
  • The AI providers and services you connect have their own terms. Mains is not a party to them.
  • The software is provided as is, without warranty, to the extent the law allows.

These terms

These terms are between you and the Mains team ("we", "us") and cover the website at mains.dev, Mains for Mac as downloaded from our releases, and Mains for iPhone as downloaded from the App Store. By using any of them you agree to these terms. If you download the iPhone app from the App Store, Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies, and where it conflicts with these terms on a matter Apple requires, Apple's terms win.

The software is open source

The source code of Mains for Mac, Mains for iPhone and the shared contracts between them is published on GitHub under the MIT License. That license — not these terms — governs what you may do with the code: use it, change it, build and redistribute it, subject to its conditions. These terms apply to the builds we ship and to the website. The Mains name and wordmark are not part of the license.

Your Mac, your agents, your responsibility

Mains runs AI coding agents on your own computer, in workspaces you point it at, with the permissions you set. An agent may read and change files, run commands, make commits and open pull requests, and — through the providers you connect — send the contents of your workspace to those providers. You decide which providers to use, which folders to expose, and what an agent may do without asking.

You are responsible for reviewing an agent's output, commands and changes before you execute, commit, merge or otherwise rely on them; for the content you give an agent; for any charges the providers bill you; and for using Mains in a way that respects the rights of others and the terms of the services you connect.

Third-party services

Mains works with services you already have accounts with: AI providers (Anthropic, OpenAI, GitHub, Cursor), code hosts and trackers (GitHub, GitLab, Linear, Jira, Asana, Notion, Slack and others), Apple, and Tailscale. Your use of each is governed by its own terms and privacy policy. We do not control these services, are not responsible for them, and cannot promise they stay available or unchanged.

Acceptable use

Do not use Mains to break the law, to access systems or data you are not authorised to access, to distribute malware, to attack or overload the services Mains connects to, or to circumvent their limits and security measures.

Availability and changes

We may change, pause or stop any part of the website or the apps at any time. Features marked beta or experimental may change or go away without notice. We may release new versions that change how Mains works.

No warranty

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the website and the apps are provided as is and as available, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, or that they will be error-free, secure or uninterrupted. Agents make mistakes; Mains does not review their output for you.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost data, lost profits or the cost of substitute services, arising from your use of Mains or of the services you connect to it. Our total liability for all claims relating to Mains will not exceed the amount you have paid us for it in the twelve months before the claim — which, for free software, is nothing. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Türkiye, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and any dispute will be brought before the courts of Istanbul, Türkiye — unless the consumer-protection law of the place where you live gives you rights that cannot be waived, in which case those rights stand.

Changes to these terms

The date at the top is when these terms last changed. Continuing to use Mains after a change means you accept the changed terms.
